Bad Foods for Type 2 Diabetes

Bad Foods for Type 2 Diabetes

Type II diabetics should avoid meals that are high in carbohydrates and fats and any foods that cause rapid peaks or valleys in blood sugar. Some foods add to the complications of diabetes, including hypertension and heart disease, and should also be enjoyed in moderation.

Drinks

Replace sugary soft drinks, iced teas and sports drinks with sugar-free drinks and water. Drink no more than two glasses of alcohol per day, and keep in mind that some drinks such as gin and vodka raise blood sugar, while drinking beer on an empty stomach lowers it very quickly.

Starches

Skip starchy foods and bread products made from white flour. Put aside white bread, bagels, English muffins, potatoes, white rice and refined pastas.

Cereal

Stick to whole grain cereals and not their refined counterparts. Cereals made from refined grains are low in fiber, magnesium, vitamin E, zinc and other important nutrients.

Dessert

Go easy on the desserts. No pastries, pie, cake, candy, donuts or cookies.

Juice

Drink no more than 4 oz. of fruit juice at breakfast and avoid completely those containing high fructose corn syrup.

Fats

Limit saturated fats, which cause high cholesterol and can lead to heart disease and hardening of the arteries. No more than 25 percent to 30 percent of your daily intake should come from beef, lamb, pork, dairy products, coconut, coconut oil, palm oil and tropical oils.
