When people are not feeling well, they may need a much lighter diet or one that is bland and easily digestible. Dogs are no different. When your dog is feeling bad, he will still require proper nutrition. During this time, normal dog food may be too much for her weak stomach. There are several things you can do to modify his diet that may help on the road to recovery until you can visit your vet.
Chicken Broth
Prepare homemade chicken broth for your pet if she is having a hard time keeping food down. Canned chicken broth is not as appetizing to your pet but will work if you have no alternative. Boil a few pieces of chicken in enough water to cover until the chicken is completely cooked and tender. Remove the chicken from the pot, and allow the stock to cool. Once it has cooled, allow your pet to drink the broth. Only allow your dog to eat a few spoonfuls at first or lick the broth from your fingers. If your dog keeps this down, you can add a tiny bit of chopped up chicken into the broth.
Cream of Rice
If your dog is very sick, try preparing cream of rice cereal. Cream of rice cereal is a good food for puppies that have just been weaned. Cream of wheat cereal also works well, if your dog will eat it. Do not allow your dog to eat more than 3/4 cup of cereal at a time. Overeating can cause your dog to get worse, so make sure meals are small and light. Feed smaller amounts more often.
Rice
If your dog is beginning to hold down food and seems hungry, try plain rice. Prepare the rice according to the package, but do not add any salt or spice. Salt can dehydrate a sick dog, and spices can irritate the stomach. Allow your dog to eat no more than a cup of cooked rice at a time. If your pet is holding this down, you can combine 1 cup of rice with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, two hard-boiled eggs and 1/4 cup of cottage cheese. This will provide a filling meal.
Scrambled Eggs
Scrambled eggs are a good meal for a dog that is not feeling well. Prepare three scrambled eggs by using a small amount of oil in a pan. Break open the eggs and cook on medium heat while stirring often. Add 1/4 cup of cottage cheese and 1/2 cup of cooked rice. This recipe is bland on the stomach but is an excellent source of protein.
