How to Improve a Stomach Gas Problem

The buildup of gas can bring on a variety of problems such as flatulence, abdominal bloating and stomach pain. However, there are ways to relieve stomach gas and get rid of discomfort. It's often a matter of narrowing down the cause of gas.

    Treat gas with over-the-counter remedies. Anti-gas medications are readily available over the counter, and these drugs quickly alleviate stomach gas and other uncomfortable symptoms. Take medications as instructed.

    Refrain from eating foods that produce gas. Certain foods and drinks are known to cause gas and pain (cauliflower, carbonated drinks, onions, beans and artificial sweetners.) Eliminate these foods from your diet to improve or stop gas.

    Control gas with supplements. If you cannot or do not want to give up your favorite "gassy" foods, take a digestive enzyme before eating to ward off gas.

    Avoid dairy. Milk products can also bring on or aggravate stomach gas. Limit your intake of ice cream, milk, cheese and yogurt, or take a lactose digestive enzyme to deter and fight gas.

    Add fiber to your diet. A low-fiber diet results in infrequent bowel movements or constipation, and constipation triggers flatulence. Eat 20g to 35g fiber a day to get rid of constipation and improve stomach gas.

    Eat four to six small meals a day. Overeating can initiate stomach gas. Cut back on your food portions and eat smaller meals rather than three large meals.

    Exercise. If constipation or irritable bowel syndrome prompts stomach gas, get active and engage in regular exercise to activate intestinal contractions and regulate bowels. Normal bowel movements lower the likelihood of gas.
