Foods You Can Eat on a Diabetic Diet

Diabetics can eat most any kind of food. The keys to the diabetic diet are moderation and well-balanced meals. Diabetics are encouraged to eat food from all the food groups, but to limit how much they eat.

Carbohydrates

Diabetics should eat approximately 150 grams of carbohydrates each day, distributed throughout the day through meals and snacks. They should eat whole grain bread, pasta, rice, potato, squash, peas, corn and legumes.

Protein

Diabetics should not consume more than 6 oz. of protein a day, but at least 4 oz. This protein can come from lean red meat, plenty of fish and poultry, as well as cheese and tofu.

Fats

Fat intake should be limited to 1 g of saturated fat per serving and no more than 3 total g of fat per serving.

Vegetables and Fruit

At least five servings of non-starchy vegetables and fruit should be part of a diabetic's diet. They should eat leafy vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, tomatoes, apples, berries, bananas and melon.

Dairy

Diabetics should consume at least two servings of dairy a day such as low fat or skim milk and low fat or nonfat yogurt.
