Adding a fat to your diet to lose weight seems counterproductive, but studies like those by J. Kabara, Ph.D., professor emeritus at Michigan State University, have shown that emphasizing extra-virgin coconut oil can help stimulate the metabolism in some people, causing them to lose weight and increase their energy levels. Between 4 and 6 tbsp. extra-virgin coconut oil a day gives you all the health benefits and aid in your diet program.
This is different than refined, or plain coconut oil. Extra-virgin coconut oil is made from coconuts that are only partially dried and then pressed mechanically. Refined coconut oil has been bleached, deodorized and purified taking away many of the properties you are looking for when adding to a weight loss program.
Instructions
- 1
Take 1 tbsp. oil before each meal up to four times a day. This will result in less overall appetite. In fact, the coconut oil acts like a carbohydrate in the body. It is quickly processed and available for use as quick energy.
2Add extra-virgin coconut oil into a protein drink for a power boost. Drink as a meal replacement or before or after working out. A post-workout shake can help your body build healthier cells and aid in weight loss.
A simple shake recipe calls for 6 to 8 oz. of fruit juice, a banana, 2 or 3 strawberries or peach slices, 1 scoop of whey powder and 2 tbsp. extra virgin coconut oil in a blender. Blend until smooth and drink immediately.
3Cook skinless, boneless chicken with coconut oil instead of other oils for frying or baking. The extra-virgin coconut oil adds healthy acids that contribute to the digestion process: chemicals such as linoleic acid, myristic acid, capric acid, oleic acid and lauric acid. You can also drizzle it on cooked vegetables or rice dishes. Don't use it on cold salads; coconut oil will solidify.
